This plan requires a dedicated mindset, 100% focus, guts and max effort. Inspired by the late great Mike Mentzer and Arthur Jones, this plan follows a lot of the Heavy Duty principles.

This High Intensity Training (HIT) workout is focused on eliciting a growth response without over-training. Typical routines require multiple sets and reps that require greater recovery in response to more work completed. HIT focuses on 1 set, primarily a single exercise or superset, to employ maximum intensity and effort, without over-training. The workouts are split into 3 days, each days’ exercises will train the upper and lower body. The Tempo of each lift is utilised to ensure safety and exhaustion on the Concentric, Isometric and Eccentric portions of strength. Muscle growth occurs through reaching the point of failure on each compound (or beyond, through assistance and advanced training systems – especially when at a sticking point).

The plan is a 3-day, full body workout. The principles of heavy duty are explained very clearly by Mike Mentzer himself, and should you wish to dive deeper into the topic I advise you check out the video here. I have adapted the workouts from the likes of Mike Mentzer, Arthur Jones and Dorian Yates to bring you the 80’s Hardcore Heavy Duty workout plan.
